CALF MANAGEMENT AND HEALTH
Calf are very weak regards to immunity. Death is most common in 1 month post delivery. So it's require special attention for health and survival.
ATTENTION AFTER BIRTH
- After birth first take his\her weight.higher weight is better for survival. it is useful in winter and rainy season
- average weight of cow calf is 20-35 kg.
- average weight of buffalo calf is 30-40 kg
- First 8 hours calf needs more care, feed more mother's colostrum by suckling or by feeding bottle
MORTALITY DURING 48 HOURS AFTER CALVING
- May be metabolic disease mostly hypoglycemia which cause hypothermia (below normal body temperature)
- may congenital deffect
- due to infection of E.coli
MORTALITY DURING 28DAYS AFTER CALVING
- Immunoglobulin deficiency and septicaemia and viral(rotavirus) infections.
- Diarrhoea and pneumonia,naval ill, arthritis may occur due to failure of immunoglobulin transfer from intestine
- Calf mortality varies from country to country an also breed to breed (exotic breed mortality rate is higher)
CAUSES FOR DEATH ARE:
- Digestive diseases/enteritis : 17.7%
- Respiratory diseases : 15.4%
- Septicaemia : 21.5%
- Miscellaneous causes : 45.5%
HOW TO REDUCE CALF MORTALITY
- Give more colostrum feeding from mother after birth
- Provide good ventilation and warm room
- After feeding on colostrum give half spoonful pulsatilla 200(homoepathic medicine) mixed with little water once in a day for improving appetite and digestion
- Sanitized calf pen and provide hygenic water for drinking
- Umbilicus infection mostly occur in calf because of trauma, dirt place so E.coli,Proteus sp., Staphylococcus sp., etc., which result bacteramia/septicaemia and fever. It mainly occur 2-5 days after birth. So painting of umbilical from tincture of iodine is needed daily for prevent infection.
